About NIWA

Local experience. Public purpose. Women's advancement.

NIWA is an Abakaliki-based civil-society organisation working with women, young people and communities to advance wellbeing, rights and meaningful participation.

1996

the year NIWA reports its community work began

Our story

Created for change that reaches everyday life.

Neighbourhood Initiative for Women Advancement began with a belief that women and young people should be able to influence the decisions, services and opportunities that shape their lives.

Over time, that purpose has led NIWA into connected areas of work: women’s rights, accountable governance, community health, water and sanitation, education, child protection, livelihoods, agriculture and the environment.

NIWA remains rooted in Ebonyi State while participating in wider civil-society conversations across Nigeria.

How we work

Participation is not an afterthought.

Programmes are strongest when people understand the issue, contribute local knowledge and have a route to hold institutions accountable.

01

Community dialogue

Listen to lived experience and create room for different voices to shape the response.

02

Clear public education

Translate rights, policies and health information into language people can use.

03

Constructive advocacy

Bring community priorities into conversations with government, civil society and other institutions.

04

Practical delivery

Pair advocacy with tangible work, from community sessions to water infrastructure.
